5 THINGS YOU DON'T KNOW ABOUT ME

One of my favourite parts of being a copywriter is learning what makes a business tick.

What makes it different and unique? How can I make my client stand out from others in their industry?

It’s not always an easy exercise, but it’s always worth the effort.

So just for a bit of fun, I tried to think about a few things that were unique about me.

And it was HARD!

But after much thought, here are 5 things you might not know about me - Dayarne Smith, your friendly neighbourhood copywriter!

I’m named after a horse

Not any old horse, but the Bart Cummings-trained racehorse Dayana.

She was the 1972/73 Australian Racehorse of the Year. Dayana won four Australian derby’s and ran 12th in the 1973 Melbourne Cup.

My dad named me Dayarne.

It’s pronounced phonetically, DAY-ARN. My family and friends call me Day.

I’m a heart kid

I had open heart surgery when I was three years old to repair a hole in my heart and a deformed artery.

Even though I was a toddler, I still have some memories from that time. I remember a lovely male nurse, I remember the giraffe height chart in the hospital bathroom and I remember the nursery rhyme I sang while I was being put under anesthetic. For the record, it was Baa Baa Black Sheep.

My surgeon did a fabulous job, and my heart health is now perfect!

I have a neat little 30cm scar down my chest, but it’s been a part of me for so long I hardly ever notice it.

I’ve always been a writer

My first short story was published when I was six. It was about a baby that got lost in the woods – but don’t worry, it had a happy ending!

I was in Year 2 when I told my teacher I wanted to be a journalist. True to my word, I studied Journalism at university. I worked as a newspaper journalist for 12 years before becoming a copywriter.

I can be a scaredy-cat, sometimes

I have a list of animals that freak me out … mice, cats, dogs, sharks, snakes and birds (especially chickens, magpies and pelicans). Spiders are fine.

I don’t like driving in the rain.

And I run screaming from the ocean when seaweed touches my leg.

I love learning

I’m a proud nerd. Learning new things and continually improving my professional development makes my business better.

After completing a Bachelor of Communication Studies and working as a journalist for 12 years, I started my copywriting business and studied a Marketing Diploma.

This year I have completed an introductory SEO copywriting course, and now I’m working my way through more advanced SEO training. (Want to know what SEO is? Find out more here).
