6 SIMPLE TIPS TO WRITE IT RIGHT

There is a lot more to getting your marketing material right than just 'dotting the i's and crossing the t's', but you can never underestimate the importance of correct spelling and grammar.

You run the risk of turning potential customers off with poorly written material, so here are my top six tips for improving your company's written content.

1. Check it twice

Check and double check your work before hitting send on your email, posting to social media, or sealing the envelope. If it is a particularly important document, get a colleague to look at it for you. It’s amazing what a second pair of eyes can pick up.

2. Look it up!

Please don't guess. I recently cringed when I saw a sign painted on the front of a pub advertising 'accomadation'. If in doubt, check – your phone is a dictionary and thesaurus in the palm of your hand, so there’s no excuse.

3. It's an s

Make sure you aren't using US English in your word processing program, or you'll end up with z's where an s should be, e.g. organize/organise, realize/realise. Australian English uses the s.

4. Fix it, quick!

Our smartphones make plenty of typos! If you do notice an autocorrect fail, or a spelling or grammar mistake in your social media post, even if it’s from weeks or months ago, fix it! You never know who might scroll through your feed, so it’s worth taking a few seconds to hit edit and fix the mistake.

5. Keep it simple

Don't over-complicate things. Keep sentences short and to the point. Don't use a long word where a short one will do. You want to sound like an expert, but there is a limit. Avoid jargon and make sure your customers get your message.

6. Outsource if you can

Hiring a professional copywriter to do the job for you, particularly with big tasks like your website content can save you time and money in the long run. Or, if you really prefer to write it yourself, pay a professional to proof read and edit it for you - you may be surprised at how much they can improve your content.
